Storm’s Drive-In Names New Manager
“Marble Falls is a town I love — so it’s great to be back home,” stated Travis Barker, discussing his position as the new manager of the local Storm’s .
“This is a growing community,” said Robbis Storm, president of the locally-owned hamburger chain, “and we want to grow with it. Our management team is confident that Travis can tweak the menu, improve service and give you the quality we’re famous for.”
“We’ve always served great food at Storm’s,” Barker added, “so I don’t want to change too much. But you can make a good thing better, so I’m excited about adding a few special items like sweet potato fries and three new ice tea flavors: peach, raspberry and healthy green tea.”
“One of the best things about Marble Falls,” mused Barker, “is how friendly everyone is. I really enjoy meeting people here, especially catching up with old high school classmates and their families.”
After graduating from Marble Falls High School in 1990, Barker, 40, joined the U. S. Navy. He served two years, including a tour in Somalia where he saw combat. While serving his country, he continued his education at Saint Leo University in Florida with classes in business management.
Following his military stint, he worked for a number of companies including Gateway Computers, Anheuser Busch, Office Depot, and Butter Krust Bakery, before he joined Storm’s in 2006.
His wife Cathleen works as a Life Skills Paraprofessional at Marble Falls Elementary School. The Barkers and their three children make their home in Granite Shoals.
Marble Falls Storm’s (830-693-0012) is located across from HEB at 1408 Hwy 1431. The very first Storm’s Drive-In – where Elvis used to hang out in the 1950s – dates back 61 years to the original location in Lampasas. You can also get a “Storm’s Special” burger at locations in Burnet and Hamilton. A few years ago, the Food Network named Storm’s as one of the best old-fashioned drive-ins in the country.
“It means a lot to me to work at a place with such a long history,” Barker said, “and I’m going to work hard to keep up the great reputation for high-quality food and excellent service at Storm’s.”
History
The Storm family has had a lot of experience feeding hungry travelers. The first Storm's in Texas dates back to 1873 when my great-grandfather William Washington Storm built a stagecoach stop and post office in Wood County. I'm not sure of the exact menu, but I expect my great-grandmother served up chicken fried steak and fresh catfish -- much like we serve today
Storm's Hamburgers and French Fries didn't become famous until 1944 -- the year I was born -- when my father Jim Storm owned and operated a diner in San Antonio. Then in 1950, my family moved back to the Hill Country to open The Dairy Cue -- a name we changed 20 years later to Storm's.
We're in our 50th year in that same location in Lampasas, as well as in Burnet and Hamilton. We've been around a long time and have seen many changes in the food industry. Change can be good, but in some areas we still do things the way we did 50 years ago. We're one of the few old-fashioned places that grind our own beef so we can guarantee the flavor and quality of our famous Texas hamburgers. And for French Fries we still slice fresh potatoes every day.
So I invite you to try a famous Storm's Hamburger -- or order up a plate of fresh catfish. We've been feeding folks a long time, and we're good at it.
